BIT Team!

Last year, we had our first meeting in Maginhawa in the office of our NGO. We almost got lost on the way there but we eventually found the office. We got were there with another group also assigned to EU-ASEAN. Before we met our coordinator, a member of the Focus on the Global South entertained us and explained their connection with EU-ASEAN FTA. We chatted about their projects until our coordinator arrived.

We got to talk to sir Joseph Purugganan, our coordinator, about how we will be able to help them in their project. He gave us three choices and we chose to find the Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) between the Philippines and other countries and to compare each of them. By comparing these BITs, we hope to find out if these treaties serve to benefit foreign investors more.

Since the meeting, we have been looking for the said treaties and found a total of 35. We set up a meeting with sir Joseph to update him on our progress and our next task to fulfill.

Our next task is to set up a meeting with DTI undersecretary Adrian Cristobal, Jr and inquire what their plan of action is regarding expiring treaties. We are especially excited, yet at the same time, nervous to do this since he’s the “undersecretary” of DTI. It’s kind of a big step for us from looking for BITs to talking to and official of DTI 🙂

  1. I actually thought that looking for the 35 treaties would be a long and tedious work our group but it proved me wrong, good thing we don’t need to go to any government office (DTI or DFA perhaps) to look for it because they were all available in the DFA’s website. And yes! I’m actually looking forward to be meeting the DTI Undersecretary as well. 🙂

  2. Wow ! I feel excited for you guys too on meeting the “undersecretary” of DTI. :> I think and I believe that you’ll be able to learn a lot from discussing about the BITs and maybe you guys can even formulate a plan/project that could improve these treaties to make them more efficient and effective. 😀
