A few years ago, I find myself asked about who is the hero for me, I would think along the lines of Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Jacinto… well, those big names for which Philippine history is concerned with. Indeed they are heroes; I would always admire how they had sacrificed their lives for the sake of our nation and, I do hope that Filipinos would never forget the role that these big names have played in our history. And now, I was asked the same question again. A hero could actually be anyone who saves the day. It could be the parents, who have been working long hours to give financial support for their own families especially for their children; tirelessly raised their children; and patiently tolerated their children’s tantrums, whining, and all those kinds of immaturity you can imagine. It could be the soldiers whose lives are always on the risk as they help in building up defense for this country while they spend much of their time away from their families. It could be the teachers or the educators who impart their knowledge to the future of our nation, the youth.
For me, a hero could be even just an ordinary individual who, through his or her actions, shows that uncommon valor is a common virtue. All those individuals who truly serve the nation pass the test of being a hero with flying colors. So, to all the heroes out there, I salute you!
